About natural smoke ventilation (nshev)

Natural smoke and heat exhaust ventilation (NSHEV) uses the buoyancy of hot smoke to escape through high-level AOVs, with low-level inlet air.

The most common system in UK residential stairs, low-rise flats, HMOs and atriums.

Local considerations in Mayfield, Midlothian

In Scotland, smoke ventilation in new and altered buildings is designed under the Scottish Building Standards Technical Handbooks (Section 2: Fire), and once the building is occupied the responsible person has duties under the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 to keep fire safety systems, including natural smoke ventilation (nshev), in good working order.

At roughly 156 m above sea level, Mayfield sees more wind, driving rain and frost than lowland areas, so we pay attention to weather sealing, cable entries and, for vents, rain and wind sensors.

Around Mayfield we often work on smaller blocks, rural businesses, farms and private homes, where power supply and cable runs can be longer, so we check these at survey.

We check vent locations, inlet air, controller and fire alarm interface. The from price is the smallest controller; full systems are quoted after survey.
