Used on flat roofs above stairs in blocks of flats and commercial buildings.
Local considerations in Newcastle, Newry Mourne and Down
In Northern Ireland, smoke ventilation in new and altered buildings is designed under Technical Booklet E of the Building Regulations (Northern Ireland), and once the building is occupied the responsible person has duties under the Fire and Rescue Services (Northern Ireland) Order 2006 and the Fire Safety Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2010 to keep fire safety systems, including smoke vent roof hatches, in good working order.
Around Newcastle we often work on smaller blocks, rural businesses, farms and private homes, where power supply and cable runs can be longer, so we check these at survey.
We check the upstand size, roof build-up, ladder access and free area.
