About smoke shafts
A smoke shaft is a vertical duct from each floor's corridor to the roof, with a vent or damper on each floor and an AOV at the top. Natural shafts rely on buoyancy; mechanical shafts add a fan.
Used in residential corridors of taller blocks of flats.
Local considerations in Downpatrick, Newry Mourne and Down
In Northern Ireland, smoke ventilation in new and altered buildings is designed under Technical Booklet E of the Building Regulations (Northern Ireland), and once the building is occupied the responsible person has duties under the Fire and Rescue Services (Northern Ireland) Order 2006 and the Fire Safety Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2010 to keep fire safety systems, including smoke shafts, in good working order.
Around Downpatrick we often work on smaller blocks, rural businesses, farms and private homes, where power supply and cable runs can be longer, so we check these at survey.
We check shaft size, damper or vent on each floor, top vent and controls. Price shown is a comparable controller.
