About smoke shafts

A smoke shaft is a vertical duct from each floor's corridor to the roof, with a vent or damper on each floor and an AOV at the top. Natural shafts rely on buoyancy; mechanical shafts add a fan.

Used in residential corridors of taller blocks of flats.

Local considerations in Treorchy, Rhondda Cynon Taf

In Wales, smoke ventilation in new and altered buildings is designed under Approved Document B as published by the Welsh Government, and once the building is occupied the responsible person has duties under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 as it applies in Wales to keep fire safety systems, including smoke shafts, in good working order.

At roughly 161 m above sea level, Treorchy sees more wind, driving rain and frost than lowland areas, so we pay attention to weather sealing, cable entries and, for vents, rain and wind sensors.

Around Treorchy we often work on smaller blocks, rural businesses, farms and private homes, where power supply and cable runs can be longer, so we check these at survey.

We check shaft size, damper or vent on each floor, top vent and controls. Price shown is a comparable controller.
