About mechanical smoke ventilation (msv)

Mechanical smoke ventilation uses high-temperature fans to extract smoke, usually from corridors through a shaft, with dampers on each floor.

Used in taller residential blocks, long corridors and deep-plan buildings.

Local considerations in Barnoldswick, Lancashire

In England, smoke ventilation in new and altered buildings is designed under Approved Document B of the Building Regulations (England), and once the building is occupied the responsible person has duties under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 to keep fire safety systems, including mechanical smoke ventilation (msv), in good working order.

At roughly 161 m above sea level, Barnoldswick sees more wind, driving rain and frost than lowland areas, so we pay attention to weather sealing, cable entries and, for vents, rain and wind sensors.

Around Barnoldswick we often work on smaller blocks, rural businesses, farms and private homes, where power supply and cable runs can be longer, so we check these at survey.

We review the design, fans, dampers, panel and standby power. Price shown is a comparable multi-zone controller; MSV systems are quoted after survey.
